How we do it

  1. Look at where the ice actually formsWe walk the roof and the ground and ask what happened last winter. Cable everywhere is wasted money — cable on the two eaves and one valley that dam every year is the job.
  2. Lay out the runZigzag along the eave so the heated band covers the overhang and reaches back past the exterior wall line, then continue into the gutter and all the way down the downspout. A heated eave draining into a frozen gutter accomplishes nothing.
  3. Mount without perforating the roofClips attach to the shingle edge and gutter rather than nailing through the roof surface. Every hole in a roof is a future leak, so we do not make any.
  4. Power it properly and hand it overCable needs a dedicated GFCI-protected circuit — that part is a licensed electrician’s work, and we coordinate it rather than pretend otherwise. Then we show you the controller and when to use it.

Where heat tape is the right call — and where it is not

We would rather be straight with you than sell cable to everyone who asks.

Heat tape does not fix the cause of ice dams. Dams form because heat leaking into the attic melts snow from underneath, and that meltwater refreezes when it reaches the cold eave. Cable does not stop that. What it does is keep an open drainage channel so the water gets off the roof instead of pooling behind a ridge of ice and backing up under the shingles.

It is the right call when: you have a vaulted ceiling or cathedral roof with no accessible attic to insulate; the same two or three eaves dam every single winter; ice falls onto an entry, walkway or driveway where somebody could get hit; you have a low-slope section or a north-facing valley that never sees sun; or the insulation and air-sealing work is on the list but is not happening this fall.

It is not the right first move when you have an accessible attic and the real problem is six inches of settled insulation, a bath fan venting into the attic, or an unsealed attic hatch. Fixing that is more effective and costs less to run. We will say so if that is what we see.

Two things people get wrong about heat cable

Cable type matters more than brand. The cheap hardware-store cable is constant-wattage: it draws full power whenever it is plugged in regardless of temperature, it cannot safely cross over itself, it should not contact metal gutters or flashing unless properly grounded, and it loses effectiveness in deep cold — right when you need it. Self-regulating cable varies its draw with temperature, can overlap safely, works against metal, and typically carries a five-year warranty against the one or two years on constant-wattage. It costs more. It is the one we install.

It costs money to run. Heat cable is a resistance heater on your roof, and a system left switched on all season adds a real amount to a winter power bill. A thermostat or moisture-sensing controller that only runs it in melt conditions pays for itself, and it stops the classic mistake of leaving the whole thing energized until May.

What drives the price

We quote every property individually rather than publishing a flat rate, because these six things change the number more than anything else. Nothing on your invoice will differ from the written quote.

Common questions

Will heat tape stop ice dams from forming?

Not on its own, and nobody should tell you otherwise. It keeps a drainage channel open through and under the snow so meltwater can leave the roof instead of building a dam. On a house whose real problem is attic heat loss, cable manages the symptom — air sealing and insulation address the cause. Where there is no accessible attic, or where the fix is not happening this year, managing the symptom is a legitimate choice.

When should it be installed?

September or October, before the first hard freeze. Installing cable on an iced roof is slower, more expensive and harder to do well. If you are already dealing with a dam, we remove that first and install afterward.

How long does it last?

Self-regulating cable is generally expected to run about ten years, with manufacturer warranties commonly around five. Constant-wattage cable typically carries a one- to two-year warranty, which tells you most of what you need to know about the difference.

Does it need its own circuit?

Yes — a dedicated, GFCI-protected circuit. That is licensed electrical work. We handle the cable and the layout, and coordinate the electrical rather than doing it ourselves.

Can I leave it plugged in all winter?

You can, and it will cost you. A thermostat or moisture-sensing controller runs it only in the conditions that actually cause dams, which is most of the benefit for a fraction of the energy. We include a controller in the quote unless you tell us not to.

Will it damage my roof?

Not the way we mount it. Cable attaches with clips at the shingle edge and gutter — no fasteners driven through the roof surface. Self-regulating cable is also safe where it overlaps and where it contacts metal, which is where badly installed constant-wattage cable causes trouble.
