How we do it
- Clear the loose material firstNeedles, leaves and branches come off by hand and with a blower. Valleys, dormer sides and the uphill side of the chimney hold the most.
- Treat growth, do not scrape itMoss and lichen get a treatment that kills the growth and lets weather carry it off over the following weeks. Scraping or blasting pulls granules off with the moss, and those granules are the shingle’s UV protection.
- Gutters by hand, then flushDebris comes out by hand into a bucket, not flushed down into the downspout where it packs into a plug. Then a water flush to confirm every downspout actually runs.
- Report what we sawPhotos of anything that needs a roofer — lifted shingles, cracked boots around vents, rusted or separated flashing, sagging gutter hangers, granule loss in the valleys.
Roofs here fail from needles and shade, not from rain
The Gallatin Valley is dry, which fools people into thinking roofs need less attention. What actually causes problems here is organic debris and the small amount of shade that holds moisture.
Conifer needles. Anything under or near pines and spruce collects needles in the valleys and behind the chimney. They pack down, hold water against the shingle, and turn into a slow compost layer. This is the single most common roof problem we see up Bridger Canyon, on the bench and anywhere with mature trees.
North-side moss and lichen. The shaded slope stays damp long enough to grow both. Lichen in particular grips into the shingle surface and pulls granules when it is removed mechanically — which is exactly why it gets treated rather than scraped.
Gutters and ice. A gutter full of needles going into winter is a gutter that freezes solid, and a frozen gutter is where ice dams start. Fall gutter cleaning is genuinely ice-dam prevention, not just tidiness.
Never let anyone pressure wash your shingles
Asphalt shingles are protected by a layer of ceramic granules. Those granules block UV, and once they are gone the asphalt underneath degrades quickly. A pressure washer removes them efficiently.
A roof that has been pressure washed looks dramatically better the day it is done and can lose years of service life for it. Manufacturers are clear that it voids the warranty. If a contractor offers to power wash your roof, that tells you what you need to know about the rest of their work.

We quote every property individually rather than publishing a flat rate, because these six things change the number more than anything else. Nothing on your invoice will differ from the written quote.

Common questions
How often do roofs need treating here?
Under heavy conifer cover, a debris clear-out every fall and often again in spring. Moss treatment is less frequent — every two to four years on a shaded slope, and possibly never on a sunny roof with no trees near it.
Will the moss disappear right away?
No. Treatment kills it, and weather carries the dead growth off over the following weeks and months. Anyone promising an immediately clean roof is planning to scrape or blast it, and that costs you granules.
Do you do gutter guards?
We clean and clear gutters and can tell you honestly how your existing guards are performing. Under heavy pine needle load, most guard systems still need periodic clearing — needles are small enough to defeat nearly all of them.
Do you repair roofs?
No. We clean and treat, and we photograph anything that needs a roofer so you can act on it. We would rather send you good photos than sell you work we do not do.
